Humans have always confronted nature, exploiting its resources and trying to tame it. The subject has been one of fascination for cinema from Les Chasses du Comte Zaroff [The Most Dangerous Game], directed by Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack in 1932 to The Revenant by Alejandro González Iñarritu.

For directors, survival films are an opportunity to go beyond the constraints of genre and action films and to grasp unexpected opportunities to approach philosophical and existential questions. Directly, frontally confronting a group of humans with the savagery of nature makes each of us consider our fragility and vulnerability as animals as well as the basic primacy of survival.

A documentary that combines visual exploration with cinephile explorations, Sauvage explores these cinematic lands where humans are not welcome.
